Burwell Family Project - An Overview

Burwell Family Project was started in September 2004 to act as an umbrella organisation for several community groups in Burwell who had previously been funded by Community Education and the Extended Schools Pathfinders Project.  Since this time the project has grown to support either different activities, all with the aim of supporting children and their family unit.  It is a not for profit community project.

The activities are:

Coffee & Co - this group evolved from the previous "Time for me" group for parents.  The group is open to all parents. The weekly sessions incorporate parenting, cooking and healthy eating workshops, sport and craft activities and aims to give the participants skills and confidence.

Study Support - a range of lunchtime and after school activities are organised at low cost for children aged 5-11 years. We always offer free and assisted places to children from families on low incomes.
The programme includes activities during the first week of the summer holidays organised and run by a group of parent volunteers.  We aim to offer opportunities which are normally limited in this area due to its rural location. The children have fun learning new skills and developing confidence and self esteem.

Keeping Up With The Children - Numeracy and Literacy courses are provided for parents. As well as gaining an understanding of what children learn at school, the parents can brush up on their own skills and find out more about adult learning.

Living With Children - Parenting courses are organised regularly. Whilst general skills are taught, there is the opportunity for parents to ask for a specific topic to be covered according to the needs of the group.

School Induction Workshops - We run an activity programme to support children and families during the transition process from Pre-School to our Reception classes.  The activities aim to give both the parent and child the confidence to feel comfortable with entering the school environment.

Family Learning - We offer activities for families to participate in together such as craft, sport and music.  In 2007 a Family Learning Week was introduced throughout the school; parents were invited to join in with their children's lessons. We encourage the concept of lifelong learning and families participating in activities together. We welcome the wider family including aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Year 6 Youth Group - We run an after-school Year 6 Youth Club during the Summer Term for children in Year 6 at the village school to help ease the transition from Primary to Secondary school.

Burwell Grow and Learn - This group is run by a project leader who has been trained by Cambridgeshire County Council.  Several groups exist in Cambridgeshire. The group offers learning through play opportunities for pre-school children and their parents free of charge.

Project Finances

We try to offer as many activities as possible free of charge to all. We make charges for the study support activities, but we keep the fees as low as possible and always offer free or assisted places to children from families on low incomes.

We have to find funding for all our activities from grants and donations.
